  "Gerrit's first wife, Barbara de Barrette, was born in Valenciennes 'in the low countryes belonging to the King of Spayne' (present-day France). Nothing more is known of Barbara or her family except that Isaac De Barrette, her brother, made petition for naturalization in Maryland in 1669 along with Gerrit and Barbara.
