    • James and Lucy Yates came from the Eastern Shore of Maryland to Culpeper Co. now known as Rappahannock Co.
      James was in the Revolutionary war and participated in the siege of Yorktown, Va. He also witnessed the surrender of Lord Cornwallis to General Washington.--Z.J. Compton letters. Also Annie V. Compton who credits him with the rank of "Captain"
      Newmann, p. 17, states, "James Yates enlisted in the Revolutionary Army March 19, 1778. Discharged Apl. 5, 1779 [1778?]"
